This fits perfectly with the story I turn to in evaluating this and other difficult transitions for the church: the matter of the acceptance of Gentiles without circumcision. The day was won not by appeal to scriptural precedent or the example of Christ--neither offered a shred of support--but by the leading of the Spirit. And, as Luke tells the story in Acts 10, this started with--wait for it--a vision in which Peter was told to eat something he didn't think he could swallow.
